Dental Implants are the standard in tooth replacement, because they fit, feel and function like natural teeth.
You’ve probably heard a great deal about the benefits of this dental treatment, and hoping and wishing for your teeth to come back again isn’t working yet. 🙂
What are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that provide a permanent base for fixed, replacement teeth. Compared to dentures, bridges and crowns, dental implants are a popular and effective long-term solution for people who suffer from missing teeth, failing teeth or chronic dental problems. Because they fit, feel and function like natural teeth, dental implants are quickly becoming a new standard in tooth replacement.
What makes dental implants feel completely comfortable and secure? Doctors use a medical-grade titanium implant fixture that, over time, actually fuses to the living bone cells of the jaw. This union forms a strong and durable anchor for your new teeth, meaning there’s no slippage or other movement (which can sometimes happen with dentures). There are also no problems eating with dental implants, no need to repair them regularly and no more worrying about smiling freely and openly.
Dental implants typically have three parts:
1) The implant:
A screw that serves as a root for your new teeth. This is what permanently attaches to your jaw.
2) The abutment:
A permanent, but removable by your doctor, connector that supports and holds a tooth or set of teeth.
3) The crown (or prosthetic tooth):
This is the part of the tooth that you can see. It’s usually made of zirconium or porcelain for durability and good looks.
You can use dental implants to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or a full upper and/or lower set of teeth. If you need to restore a full arch, you may be a perfect candidate for the full mouth treatment. Surgeons will place 4-8 dental implants and then attach a full arch of 12-14 teeth on to that, giving the procedure its name (“all on 4” “all on 6” or “all on 8” teeth).
Just as dental implants have emerged as the preferred choice for tooth replacement, the Smile Clinic approach has become the preferred model for dental implant treatment. Our team of implantologists, technicians and support staff work together as one team, with a fully equipped, onsite lab, to build beautiful smiles in a way that works for our patients.
That’s the real beauty of dental implants from Smile Clinic.
Dental Implants Can Replace:
A whole jaw
Patients who need to replace a full upper and/or lower set of teeth can now receive full mouth implants. An oral surgeon will place 4 implants and then attach a full arch of teeth, giving the procedure its name.
Mutliple Teeth
Occasionally a patient is missing more than one tooth, but still has healthy gums and surrounding teeth, and a multiple implant is the best solution. A number of dental implants are placed to support a tooth bridge, leaving other natural teeth intact.
The multiple implant solution not for everyone, and even if a patient is only missing a few teeth, it may still be preferable to perform a full mouth/arch procedure.
Single Teeth
If you have lost a single tooth due to an accident or from periodontal disease, that one tooth can be replaced using a dental implant. Your new tooth will look and function just like your other natural teeth.
If you’re considering having dental implants, you probably have tons of questions you want to be answered such as: What are dental implants? Why have they done? Is it safe to have dental implants? How much do dental implants cost? How long is the guarantee on dental implants? etc

What are dental implants?
Dental implants are an effective way of replacing missing teeth. Indeed, the use of implants is one of the biggest advances in dentistry in the past 40 years. This dental treatment is an excellent long-term option for restoring your smile and they are designed to blend in with your other teeth.
Dental implants are titanium biocompatible rods or screws, which are embedded surgically into the jawbone. An extension (called an abutment) is then secured to the dental implant so that a new dental crown can be placed on it, giving you the full functionality and look of natural teeth that will last longer than a lifetime. These metal frames are used to support dental prostheses such as dental crowns, tooth bridges or dentures. Dental implants can replace a single tooth, several teeth, or all of the teeth.
Dental implants provide stable support for artificial teeth because they are fused to your jawbone. Ordinary bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable or even possible for some people due to sore spots, poor ridges or gagging.
How to find the right clinic for dental implants abroad?
Choosing a suitable dental implant clinic starts with a correct dental diagnostics. It involves an OPG x-ray or CT-scan supported by the experience of a dental implant surgeon (not a regular dentist) and their specialised team.
As dental implant surgery is classified as outpatient surgery, it is also worthwhile looking at the level of comfort and extra services provided in your chosen dental implant clinic.
Surgery should be performed in a dental implant clinic using proven, high-grade dental implants, under a microscope, loupes, or using digital guided surgery.
Reported patient feedback from patients who have had dental implants in your particular chosen dental implant clinic is worth looking at.
Once you are looking for the dental clinic you should consider these factors:
- Your state of health,
- Location of missing tooth or teeth,
- Quantity and quality of the jawbone,
- Quality of dental clinic (the useful tool is GCR.org – international comparison of dental clinics)
- If dental tourism is an option – proximity, quality, price.

Costa Rica – 500 € – 800 €,
Mexico – between 500 € up to 1 600 €,
Thailand – 685 € up to 1 500 €,
The United Kingdom – starting from 1 200 €,
Poland – 700 € – 1 100 €,
Germany – starting from 1 800 €,
United States – $1000 – $6000
How does the process look like?
-
First of all, the dentist will surgically place the implant into your jawbone. After the treatment, the dentist may recommend you a diet of soft foods.
- Next step in this dental treatment is called osseointegration – the bone around the implant heals in a process. Osseointegration means “combines with the bone” and takes time some time. The bone actually grows around it and this makes an implant so strong.
There are patients who might need to wait up to several months before the replacement (crown or denture) can be attached to the implant.
- The last step, artificial tooth/teeth are going to be placed on the implant. Custom-made bridges or dentures are used by replacing more than a single tooth. They are made to fit your mouth and your implants.
If you need a single tooth implant, a dentist will customize a new dental crown for you to blend in with your other teeth (based on size, shape, colour and fit).
It is important to underline, that the replacement teeth usually take some time to prepare. In the meantime, your dentist may give you a temporary replacement which allows you to do your regular activities until the permanent replacement is ready.
What if I don’t have enough bone for implantation?
Experienced Dental Implantologists can tell from the initial digital OPG x-ray if a bone graft or sinus lift will be needed to support the dental implants. If you think that this might be the case, Dr Mark will discuss it with you at the consultation.
How long are dental implants guaranteed for?
All our dental implants, whatever the brand or type are guaranteed for a lifetime.
You can get a warranty on second-hand cars. You can get a warranty on just about every disposable household appliance. Yet dental professionals tend to shy away from warranties or guarantees, on one of their most proudly accomplished dental restorations – dental implants. We don’t!
Does dental implant surgery hurt?
Teeth are much harder and have a better nerve supply than bone. Thus it is easier to make the mouth numb to do a dental implant than it is to do a filling or an extraction. Most dental implants these days are placed using local anaesthesia, the mouth may be sore for a few days but heals rapidly.
Who is the right candidate for dental implants?
The state of health is the more important factor than age. This means, that you should be medically evaluated by a physician before an implant surgery is made.
Nevertheless, the patient with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes or leukaemia, may interfere with healing after surgery and they may not be good candidates for implants. Smoking or using tobacco products can slow healing as well.
If you want to receive implants, you need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. You must also commit to keeping these structures healthy. Regular oral hygiene and dental visits are critical to the long-term success of dental implants.

Alan Brewer says
Hi, I need two teeth replaced upper left 4 & 5. The problem could be that the gap has closed up a bit and I’ve been told that there isn’t much room for two but to big for one. What can be done? Can a brace be fitted to force the teeth apart again over a period of time? Teeth 3 & 6 also need to be crowned and I wondered if 4 could be an implant and if 5 could be a bridged between 4 implant and 6 crown. I also need a crown on upper right 3
To summarise:- 1. Upper left 3 – Crown
2. Upper left 4 – Implant
3. Upper left 5 – Implant or bridged tooth
4. Upper left 6 – Crown
5. Upper right 3 – Crown
I may also need bone graft for 4 & 5 so please give me an itemised estimate of costs for 1-5 and a separate quote of bone graft
You can also indicate suggested flight costs and hotels
Will you send a car to collect & return me from treatment?

Dear Calder,
May I ask where you are currently based, so that I can prepare the best treatment plan for you based on your location?
Also do you need to replace the bridge (a dental implant supported bridge would be 2 dental implants supporting 6 teeth) or simply 6 single dental implants or 6 dental implants supporting 12 teeth in the upper jaw (whole jaw replacement)?
Thank you!
Calder Fenwick says
I have seen a dentist and they have said that I am suitable to have 6 implants fitted . The top front two teeth have been missing for 30 years, so I have had a bridge with 6 teeth in total attached by two posts either side, the posts have now perished and decayed. Could you give me an idea of costs and what it would entail ( travelling etc) thank you.
